After almost nine months of being away from Earth, Sunita Williams, a NASA astronaut has returned, marking another achievement in her career. NASA initially planned for her trip to be an eight day test flight, but due to certain engineering issues with Boeing's Starliner Spacecraft she and her intelligent co-pilot Butch Wilmore had to stay much longer at the International Space Station (ISS). They used the SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule to return which culminated in a successful splashdown near Florida. Now having spent almost 609 days in proven space, Williams claimed the title of second most experienced US astronaut in the world.

A Mission Prone to Problems

These two astronauts were originally supposed to test the capabilities of Boeing's Starliner cake, but they had many unforeseen problems which hindered them from coming back to Earth. The Starliner was supposed to be a vital asset in the NASA commercial crew program but it faced many system malfunctions like software failure and propulsion problems which added more time to their wait. The Hanstandand and Boeing engineers strived towards solving these issues while keeping the astronauts safe in the ISS.

During their 285-day stay, participants took part in 150 experiments, maintenance work, and spacewalks. These studies included important ones on the impact of long-duration space flights on human health which is needed for future NASA deep space mission exploration. Although the extended mission led to political arguments regarding the governance of space missions and the Trustworthiness of Boeing in commercial space flights, NASA still remains committed to the pledge that the safety of the astronauts and scientific investigation is always paramount.

A Hero’s Return

The astronauts were flown to routine health checks after landing at the Johnson Space Center before reuniting with family. Before that, they gave post flight interviews with Wilmore stating NASA and family were core to his adventure while Williams showed appreciation saying, “Space teaches you patience and resilience,” referring to the unanticipated forgone extension of her mission.

The public and space community responses have in respect the Truman administration's unexpected adaptation to space travel notably praising Williams for her mission and inordinate capsule endurance. Her mission is a blunt lesson to all of how in space travel one must learn to deal with uncertainty while bringing alive the discussion around commercial crew program flights.

Implications for the Future

Boeing and NASA are affected in important ways by the lengthened stays. On the one hand, it demonstrated how well astronauts can manage over long periods of time on a mission; on the other, it raised questions about whether or not the Starliner is ready for future flights. NASA is currently reviewing the spacecraft’s systems for omissions to avoid the problems that were experienced in missions in the future. Other than that, everything learned from this mission will be vital in planning the subsequent Artemis missions that seek to land humans on the Moon and eventually Mars.

Williams’ ability and commitment continues to teach millions that there are certain things space exploration is not achieved by height, but by width and angles so she succeeded to defy bounds.
